The process of growing and maintaining cells under controlled conditions, typically outside their natural environment, to study biological functions and for research or therapeutic purposes.

Basic
1. Understands basic principles and safety protocols of cell culture.
2. Can prepare culture media and set up simple cell cultures.
3. Familiar with maintaining sterile conditions to prevent contamination.

Intermediate
1. Can handle different types of cells including adherent and suspension cultures.
2. Able to passage cells accurately and monitor cell growth and viability.
3. Understands common contamination sources and troubleshooting methods.

1. Designs and optimizes complex cell culture protocols for research or production.
