A pilot certified to fly aircraft relying solely on flight instruments for navigation and control, especially under conditions of poor visibility or adverse weather.
Expertise Level
Level 1
Basic
1. Understands basic principles of instrument flight rules (IFR).
2. Can interpret primary flight instruments during simulated conditions.
3. Has completed foundational training in cockpit instrument use.
Level 2
Intermediate
1. Able to conduct flights relying primarily on instruments under IFR conditions.
2. Demonstrates competence in instrument approaches and holds.
3. Effectively communicates with air traffic control during instrument flight.
Level 3
Advanced
1. Can manage and execute complex instrument flight plans in varying weather conditions.
2. Expertise in emergency procedures related to instrument failure or adverse conditions.
3. Capable of training or mentoring other pilots in instrument flying techniques.
